Artist Q+A with Lee Eveson: Kaleidoscopic Compositions

  • Structure and shape can be the building blocks of any great work of art, however the composition does not always have to be representational. :

Our Head of Art Luke Baker recently sat down with Little Van Gogh artist Lee Eveson.

What inspires you?

Graffiti and street art have always been an inspiration, not understanding why until recent years it has been held in low esteem by the wider pubic. It’s evolution over time recording artists or vandals creative mark, which becomes a compositional patchwork or narrative in the environment. My work explores themes of both sea and cityscapes using the colour and energy of combining many layers of different paintings into one kaleidoscope of composition. Hopefully this mirrors the energy and passing of time which is reflected in street art genre.

How has your practice changed over time?

Having worked as a photographer, illustrator, fine artist and teacher, your work is always evolving. My work has changed with the different stage of life I have experienced; I’ve had to be more commercially driven at times. I guess I have just become more comfortable in myself and my own practice over the years, which has come from many setbacks and some successes. I now make work for me, and if other people like it that’s a fantastic.

Describe a real-life situation that has had a direct impact on your work?

Moving from living in Leicester to the North Norfolk coast was a lifestyle decision, one which transformed the environment I was surrounded by. A lot of my work is done in homage to that and how it has made me a better person.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

The difference between being a good artist and a great one, is great artists keep on going even when their work is in a trough. (Vanda Harvey)
